Juniors! Start planning your summer review for the Fall SATs.

April 20, 2010

I know you are up to your ears in finals and projects and studying for AP exams and yes, even the spring SATs and ACTs. But look ahead to the long summer stretching out before you and realize that it is a tremendous opportunity for you to build your skills fairly painlessly, bit by bit. Take a minute to check out this clearing house type site with all sorts of study aids for the ACT and SAT and more. I bookmarked a virtual vocab flashcard tool that you might find helpful:

subsite: http://www.studystack.com/SAT

vocab drills: http://www.studystack.com/menu-178359

Each page offers multiple study methods – flashcards, stacks, mix-n-match, etc. All that is great to help you really master the words and keeps it alive, not rote.

FreeRice.comFree Rice vocabulary building and feeding the hungry is a pretty new interactive vocab-building website that is fun and really helps you build your vocabulary. Like a video game, it keeps tabs on your progress, giving you incrementally more challenging words with each one you get right. The bonus? For each answer you get right, ten grains of rice will be donated to the UN World Food Program. (And if you do your homework and drill a lot of words, the rice will add up fast!)

Notorious Confusables: Learn these easily confused words!

November 25, 2009

Here is one of my favorite vocabulary websites, especially for SAT prep:

Confusable guys

This site has a lot of great grammar lessons, and noted above are the Notorious Confusables -easily confused words.

The SAT usually has one or two such words in the Writing section among the Error ID questions. If you learn these words, you will add to your vocabulary (which will serve you well in the Sentence Completions section of the Critical Reading, as well as enhance your reading and writing skills) and you’ll be more attuned to pick out these otherwise tricky errors.
